Carbohydrates: Delicious Macronutrients

Carbohydrates in Oatmeal

Carbohydrates: Delicious Macronutrients

Macronutrients are substances in our food that provide living
organisms, such as ourselves, with the energy we need to survive.
Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are macronutrients that can be found
in different types of foods and are all part of a healthy, balanced
diet. This  article is the third, in a series of three, about foods
you can eat to get the recommended amount of macronutrients in your
diet. There are many delicious ways to get the recommended amount of
carbohydrates in your diet; check out the three suggestions below.

Oatmeal

The breakfast of champions. Oatmeal is a classic staple of western
society; a serving of oatmeal can be up to 1 whole cup and has about
25 grams of carbs. Not only does oatmeal help to reduce the risk of
heart disease, but its high fiber content helps you to feel fuller
longer. Eating oatmeal for breakfast is a great way to set yourself up
for success with the rest of the day’s meals.

Brown Rice

Rice is one of the most popular foods in the world and is a staple in
the diet of many cultures across the globe. Brown rice can be
considered one of the healthier versions of rice because of the
minimal processing that helps to preserve a lot of the rice’s
nutrients. Just like oatmeal; rice is considered a grain and is high
in fiber. One cup of brown rice offers 45 grams of carbs and can
provide a significant amount of energy.

Potatoes

Who else went straight to french fries? If only it were that simple.
The grease and salt in your french fries might negate some of the
positive benefits in your potato. A classic baked potato with some
salsa might be a good alternative to fries and will definitely be a
great way to get some nutritional benefits. A medium sized potato has
about 110 calories and 26 grams of carbs. Not only that but potatoes
are packed with vitamin C and fiber which are imperative for utilizing
all the nutrients your body needs throughout the day.

When choosing healthy carbohydrates, go for those that are minimally processed like those mentioned above and add variety and color to your diet by experimenting with different grains such as Couscous, Amaranth, Spelt, Quinoa, and Buckwheat.

Carbohydrate is used as a bad word sometimes, but it’s important to remember that food makes us stronger and smarter, providing nutrition to fuel our bodies and minds. Food is not a burden but a necessity. If we make balanced choices with our carbs, proteins, and fats then all of our food choices will work together to make and keep us stronger and healthier.

Fat: A Delicious Macronutrient

Avocado

Fat: A Delicious Macronutrient

Macronutrients are substances in our food that provide living organisms, such as ourselves, with the energy we need to survive. Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are macronutrients that can be found in different types of foods and are all part of a healthy, balanced diet. This  article is the second, in a series of three, about foods you can eat to get the recommended amount of macronutrients in your diet. There are many delicious ways to get the recommended amount of fat in your diet; check out the three suggestions below.

Avocado

Avocados are not only a great source of monounsaturated fat, they are they main ingredient of any great party… Guacamole is an easy way to eat healthy; with avocado, tomato, onions, and herbs, this favorite party dip is a great alternative to ranch or “cheese” dip. One medium avocado contains 30 grams of fat so half of an avocado is probably good enough for one serving. Try to use it as a spread in place of butter or cream cheese on a piece of toast.

Eggs

While eggs provide a great source of protein, the yolks are packed with other important nutrients like fats. Try to mix one whole egg in with your egg whites for breakfast. The healthy fats found in the yolk help with the absorption of many different fat-soluble vitamins. An egg contains 5 grams of fat.

Almonds

Nuts, in general, are a great option for a healthy snack. Almonds contain vitamin-E as well which is great for skin and tissue health. One serving of almonds is approximately 23 almonds. That might seem small but a serving of almonds contains 13 grams of fat not to mention 6 grams of protein. Nuts are a great way to feel full between meals.

Foods with healthy fats are an important part of your daily intake. They help give you the energy you need to get work done and they help keep you full and satisfied. If you think your diet might be falling short on healthy fats, try to add some almonds as a midday snack, or replace your regular dessert with a scoop of peanut butter.

Weightlifting Bar Attachments - MostFit SYN Rings

Explosive Leg Power Workout With Dr. Santo & MostFit SYN Rings

There is no sport that explosive lower body power isn’t a requirement. Power training has even been shown to help the elderly prevent falls and improve their quality of life!  These three exercises focus on everything you need to decrease your time off the line, get to the ball first, or add some heat to your fastball.

The squat/lunge combo with the MostFit SYN Rings will prime your nervous system and wake up your legs and core.  The quick step with the MostFit Band and jumping lunges with the MostFit Suspension Strap focus more on explosive speed and raw lower extremity power.  When performing in a circuit, keep your reps between 5-10 and rest a minute between exercises to get the most carryover for speed.  Or on the other hand, these exercises can be performed one after another with minimal rest for a calorie burning superset!

Suspension Training Exercises To Relieve Your Lower Back Pain!

Dr. Santo Riva, DPT, OCS, NASM-CPT

Suspension Training Exercises To Relieve Your Lower Back Pain

Relieve Lower Back Pain! w/ Dr Santo Riva And MostFit™ Suspension Strap

Most people at some time in their lives have had low back pain, or are suffering with it right now.  If this sounds familiar, here are 5 of the best core exercises and stretches to do to help your back be awesome. The bridge is going to help your back by strengthening those big gluteus muscles that help to stabilize the pelvis.

The abdominal rollout will work on your rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, and obliques in a safe position that will not put excessive stress or strain on to your discs or the vertebral bodies of your spine.

The problem with a tight anterior hip capsule and/or tight hip flexors is that they cause the pelvis to be tipped down in the front and up in the back. This causes increased stress to the discs, joints and vertebral bodies.  This stretch will get to both your hip capsule and your hip flexors, most specifically your iliopsoas muscle.

The modified MostFit™ Suspension Strap prayer stretch or child’s pose is an excellent back opener.  It provides traction to your back and gives well needed space between the joints.  Until we can figure out how to turn off gravity, this is the next best thing. If you sit more than a few hours a day, you should be doing this stretch. Period.
